More Tag Nofollow Fix for Versions 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3

You need to make changes to the post template file in the WP includes folder. On line 124 you will see the following line of code:

$output .= ‘ <a href=”‘. get_permalink() . “#more-$id\” class=\”more-link\”>$more_link_text</a>”;

You need to add the nofollow tag just before the link text. Simply replace the existing line of code with this one:

$output .= ‘ <a href=”‘. get_permalink() . “#more-$id\” class=\”more-link\” rel=\”nofollow\”>$more_link_text</a>”;

Once you save the file all of your more tag links will be nofollowed.

I do not think that this will make a huge amount of difference to your search engine rankings, but PageRank is precious and it could help prevent some of your posts being dropped from the search results.

There are a number of ways to protect your blog from piracy, but there is a tangible cost no matter what you do, and sometimes letting them steal it actually helps you in the long-run….

The first method of protection is filing DMCA requests with Google, other search engines, and perhaps the host of the site scraping your content. But honestly this can be tough to keep up with if it happens over and over again, and is probably a poor strategy given that the internet is truly global.

An easier method of protecting copyright is to simply publish partial feeds instead of whole RSS feeds. This means that while an RSS scraper may steal your content, they will not be getting much of it from you, and what they get should not be able to harm your rankings.

The third strategy is to use their content theft as an SEO & link building strategy. If you frequently reference your older blog posts in your current blog posts (using absolute links - not relative links) that means that the scraper sites will be providing free links to your content. Over time as you build up a real audience and your authority you should *usually* outrank the scrappers for your own content. A friend of mine named Joost de Valk created a Wordpress extension which automatically adds links to your site in the footer of your RSS. If you have pages that are hard to build links to and hundreds or thousands of scrappers are linking to them that could help boost your rankings for related keywords. If you use an extension like RSS Footer make sure you mix up your anchor text and footer occasionally in case anyone trained their bot to strip it out AND to help keep your anchor text profile a bit more natural.

Copyright is increasingly irrelevant each day, and being unknown is a bigger risk for most bloggers than getting outranked is. If you really push eventually you should get credit for most (if not all) of your content. In the next year or two if they have not yet solved the RSS scrapper issue I believe the major search engines may launch tools to help you register your content by submitting it to them before publishing it so they know the source.

Many people copied my ebook and distributed it across the web widely without my permission. My three solutions to that were to either encrypt it with DRM software, stop selling information, or break information into smaller pieces and keep adding premium content and sell it as a membership site basis. Instead of giving up or crippling my product I decided to launch an online training program and back it up with a community forum that turns it into more of an experience rather than just a commodity piece of information.

Watch-movies.net is without doubt the leader in online movies. The Alexa ranking for the site is in the top 300 and according to Compete, the site is getting around one million visitors per day. Why is the site doing so well? Because of good search optimisation.

In my opinion Watch-Movies.net is a very well optimised site, and whoever created it must be a genius. It is easy to see why the site dominates its niche so well, it is by no means a looker but it is incredibly easy to use.

The Rating System

One of the many things that sets it apart from the competition is the rating system in place. I am not too sure weather the site is using Drupal, Wordpress or something else, but it is fantastic. Users can view ratings for or rate any of the following:

The movies

The copies of the movies

The comments on the movies (well, you can report them if they are bad anyway)

It sounds simple, but no other online movie site that I have seen offers ratings for all of these different things, I would imagine that they really do help the users a lot.

One Page For Each Movie

Another major thing that sets this site apart is the fact that there is only ever one page for a movie. Again this sounds simple, but if you look at all of the competition, many have multiple pages for each movie. Finding the right movie is often a nightmare. With Watch-Movies.net you have all of the copies for each movie on a single page, and then of course you have the ratings, so the users know which is going to be the best copy to visit.

Searching The Site

Searching for the movie you are looking for could not be simpler - if you know what you want type it into the search box and it will bring it up. If you do not know what you are looking for, you can browse movies by any of the following:

Release date

Movie type

Best ratings in new release

Also, featured movies are shown throughout the site, and when you are browsing individual movie pages related movies are shown on the right hand side.

The User Comments

Finally the comments are managed incredibly well for a site of that size, there are no swear words and the users seem to be surprisingly friendly.

The site does do well on Google, if you search for watch before or after many of the movie titles you will see the site coming up. However a website of this quality deserves to be ranked far higher. If you search for a movie title on its own, the site will not usually make the top few pages. If I were Google, this is what I would have the top 5 looking like for movie titles. Like Michael Gray I believe that the official movie site should be ranked no.1.

Official movie site

IMDB listing

Wikipedia I suppose

Somewhere to buy it, Amazon or something

Watch-movies.net page

Movie fans would probably never have to venture outside of the top 5 results. Instead you have review after review, with the odd place where you can buy it for more money than Amazon, or whatever whoever is at #4 is charging.

Never the less, the Watch-movies.net site is a brilliant piece of work and I would imagine that using the site is absolute bliss. I am sure that sooner or later the site will start getting the credit it deserves. I challenge anyone to find me a movie fan who wouldn’t want this site to come up in the top 5 - MPAA employees don’t count.

Watch-Movies.net includes everything you need for watching a movie, including different versions and copies, on one single dedicated page for that movie. And then of course you have user ratings, so you can instantly see weather or not the film is any good and which is going to be the best copy to visit.

I have been speaking to a couple of friends and looking at some of my client’ stats and have come up with a rough guide to how many unique visitors on average you can expect to get from a popular story on some of the top social tagging and news sites. I have worked out my estimates mainly from Google Analytics….

There is a new sheriff in town, there have been reports of Yahoo! Buzz sending over one million visitors to a frontpage story. From what I have heard off one or two bloggers you can generally expect just short of half a million uniques.

Frontpage Traffic: 100,000 - 1,000,000+

Social news site Digg is renowned for crashing servers, this is mainly because of the volume of visitors it sends in such a short space of time when a submission 1st hits the frontpage.

Frontpage Traffic: 2,000 - 60,000+

In my experience a submission to StumbleUpon will generally go popular and send some decent traffic when it gets to around 50 stumbles, the bulk of the traffic will usually spread over 2-3 days, after that it will come in dribs and drabs.

Traffic: 1,000 - 50,000+

If your submission is liked by the Fark community it will without doubt receive some good traffic. If a link makes it onto the frontpage it will receive huge amounts.

Frontpage Traffic: 5,000 - 45,000+

The mother tech news site Slashdot (/.) can still send a huge amount of traffic if you get your submission approved. The bulk of the traffic popular links receive is spread over the 24 hours or so that they are on the frontpage.

Frontpage Traffic: 1,500 - 30,000+

Humor site Ebaums World has been largely overlooked by internet marketers as a good traffic source. The newly created link submit category can drive thousands of visitors.

Frontpage Traffic: 2,500 – 20,000+

Another site that seems to have been overlooked by internet marketers is I Am Bored, popular submissions will generally receive many thousands of unique visitors.

Frontpage Traffic: 2,000 - 20,000+

Providing you have some descent news or a story that will interest the community Reddit is a sure thing for a quick burst of visitors. The amount of visitors a popular link receives will depend on how far up the frontpage it goes and how long it stays there for.

Frontpage Traffic: 2,500 - 15,000+

Social tagging site Delicious tends to send traffic over time. However links that hit the frontpage will generally receive a good couple of thousand visitors in short space of time.

Frontpage Traffic: 500 - 5,000+

With Propeller you will not get very much traffic for just making it onto the frontpage. But if a submission makes it into the top 5 it can receive a good couple of thousand visitors.

Frontpage Traffic: 50 - 3,500+

Social news site Newsvine is not to be overlooked, if a breaking news story is submitted it will normally receive a good amount of traffic.

Frontpage Traffic: 500 - 2,000+

Community based internet news site ShoutWire can send some real traffic and is well worth submitting to. Frontpage submissions can sometimes receive over 1,000 visitors.

Frontpage Traffic: 500 - 1,500+

The popular links site Plime doesn’t send a huge amount of visitors, but it is still worth submitting to. If a submission makes the frontpage it can receive a good few hundred visitors.

Frontpage Traffic: 150 - 700+

The newest social news site to make some headway is Mixx, it is still only very new, but traffic is increasing all of the time. Submissions that make it to the frontpage can receive a couple of hundred visitors in a short space of time.

Frontpage Traffic: 50 - 250+

Internet marketing social site Sphinn can drive some really targeted traffic if you have the right content. Popular submissions can receive a couple of hundred visitors in less then 24 hours.

Frontpage Traffic: 75 - 250+

There are of course many other social tagging and news sites out there that are worth targeting, but these are the ones that I have experience with and I believe i have covered most of the best traffic drivers.

Google has indexed the wrong version of the homepage for 3 different client websites in the last 3 months, it is my fault really because I should have taken care of things before it happened. In all 3 cases the clients homepage rankings on Google almost completely disappeared (scary stuff). Here is some information on how I handled each situation.

The 1st one was really easy, the clients regular homepage www.domain.com had been de-indexed and replaced by www.domain.com/home. I set up a 301 redirect using htaccess from www.domain.com/home to www.domain.com. Because this particular site had navigation to both versions of the homepage, Google recognized the redirect within a couple of days and the client re-gained their rankings.

The 2nd one took me about two weeks to sort out, again Google de-indexed the clients regular homepage www.domain.com and replaced it with a different version, this time it was www.domain.com/index.html, this particular site had no navigation to the other version and there were no external links to it either (how Google picked it up I don’t know). I set up a 301 redirect using htaccess just like I did last time thinking it would be sorted in a couple of days. It wasn’t sorted in a couple of days, in fact nearly two weeks had gone by and it still wasn’t fixed, the client was understandably starting to get a little anxious. I then realised that Google just wasn’t going to recognize the redirect unless I placed a link to the version that was redirecting. Fortunately I have a directory at my disposal that gets re-cached by Google every other day so I added a temporary entry linking to the version that was redirecting (www.domain.com/index.html), within less then 48 hours Google picked up the directory listing, recognized the redirect and once again the client got their rankings back. If I had been a bit more on the ball this one could have been sorted out a lot quicker.

The 3rd one was also a bit of a nightmare, this time Google had de-indexed www.domain.com and replaced it with domain.com without the www. I thought no problem I will just set up a redirect with htaccess like I had done the previous times, the client had Windows hosting and htaccess was not supported, I tried to set one up using the internet services manager but every time I went into the file properties to set it up it said (This server does not support file changing permissions), neither me or the client could work out how to fix it, the web hosting company was totally useless and changing web hosts would have been a big job. I registered the site with Google Webmaster Central, created an XML sitemap and set the preferred domain to www.domain.com, within a couple of days Google re-indexed the right version of the homepage and the client re-gained their rankings.

If this has happened or happens to you, get the 301 set up and if necessary build some links to the redirect so that Google recognizes it.

To prevent this happening in the 1st place, make sure that the versions of your homepage that you don’t want are 301′d to the one you want i.e. if you want www.domain.com 301 all non www. URLs to all www. ones and 301 www.domain.com/home to www.domain.com. If you have this set up you will have no problems. If you are having problems setting this up contact your web host, hopefully they will be more helpful then the one that I dealt with, if they are not consider getting a new host like my client has now done.

Internet. Business. Profit. To fully integrate all of these words into a successful merging you will need another word. Traffic. Every article you will find about making your site or company successful would always include the importance of generating traffic.

So, we all know that in the core of it all, traffic is the most essential thing to a successful internet based business company. Aside from ensuring that you have a great product to sell, and you have your company’s internal organization well taken core of, it would be time to get to the nitty gritty of things, generating traffic. If you already have a site and you want think that you’re not getting the traffic that you’re supposed to be getting, then its time to reconsider.

If you are contending in these very competitive business, you should always be a step ahead of your competition, increasing your traffic flow should have been done starting yesterday. Timing is essential, that’s an old adage known to everyone. But with generating traffic, you should always be on your toes and be a day ahead of everyone. Never think of today and tomorrow as a starting point for making your site traffic laden, it should always have been yesterday.

To help you out in generating more traffic for your site, here are some seven surefire ways to increase your traffic starting from yesterday.

1) Invest in good advertising with search enginesGoogle’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture provide great advertising schemes that are very truly popular and assures great traffic. Although with this surefire way to increase your traffic would cost some money. While some would shy away from spending money to increase traffic, it is imperative in this case to do so because Adwords and Overture is the top surefire way to increase your traffic. You could see for yourself the success this search engine advertising methods have reaped rewards for so many companies. Lots of site feature these advertising system and many have signed on to reap the benefits. Do not be left behind. Every penny is worth it with using Google and Yahoo’s advertising.

2) Exchange or Trade Links with other sitesWith exchanging links with other sites, both of you will benefit from the efforts both of you do to enhance your sites traffic. When one site features another sites link, they could provide one another with the traffic one site generates. The efforts are doubly beneficial because it would seem like both of you are working to generate more traffic. The more links traded with more sites the more traffic could be expected.

3) Use Viral Marketing Viral marketing allows you to spread the word about your company and product without any costs or if ever low costs only. This is a marketing method that can be quite sneaky; you can attach your company’s name, product or link to a certain media such as a funny video, entertaining game, an interesting article or a gossip or buzz. With this method, people get infected with the creativity and entertainment of the medium that they will pass it on to many people.

4) Search and use proper keywords or keyword phrases for your sites contentSearch engines look for certain keywords that they would show in their results page. In doing so, having the right keyword and keyword phrase is a high requirement in ranking in high in search engine results. You could write your own content or you could hire someone to do it for you.

5) Write Articles that can lead traffic to your siteSubmit articles to sites that would contain the same subject that your site deals in. If you sell car parts write press releases and articles about cars and car parts. Attach your sites description and services at the end of the article as well as the link.

6) Join forums and form online communitiesCapture a market and show your expertise and credibility. When you found a good foundation for your site, people will trust you and your site and will pass on to many people their trust. Traffic will certainly increase because they know that you can provide what they need.

7) Lastly, Offer newsletters. If many people know what you are about and your existence is shared with many others, you will find a loyal traffic that can provide you with more traffic by recommendation. If you arouse the curiosity of your customers they would be pushed to help you with your traffic.

Whether you are a new entrepreneur or a more experienced business owner, taking control of your finances can feel like a part-time job. Some simple tips can help you streamline your time, organize your finances and reduce the stress of business money matters.

Whether you are a new entrepreneur or a more experienced business owner, taking control of your finances can feel like a part-time job. Some simple tips can help you streamline your time, organize your finances and reduce the stress of business money matters.

1. Keep Your Bills in One Place

When the mail comes, make sure it goes in one place. Misplaced bills can be the cause of unwanted late fees and can damage your credit rating. Whether it’s a drawer, a box, or a file, be consistent. Size is also important. If you get a lot of mail, use an area that won’t get filled up too quickly.

2. Pay Your Bills on Schedule

Bill paying can be simplified if it’s done at scheduled times during the month. Depending on how many bills you receive, you can establish set times each month when none of your bills will be late. If you’re paying bills as you receive them, chances are you’re spending too much time in front of the checkbook. Although bills may state “Payable Upon Receipt”, there’s always a grace period. Call the creditor to find out when they need to receive payment before the bill is considered late.

3. Read Your Credit Card Statements

Most people take advantage of low interest credit card offers but never read their statements when paying the bill. Credit cards are notorious for using low interest as bait for new customers then switching to higher rates after a few months. Make a habit of looking at your statement carefully to see what interest rate you are paying each month and if any transaction fees have been applied. If the rate increases or a transaction fee appears on your statement, a simple call to the credit card company can oftentimes be beneficial in resolving the matter. If not, try to switch your money to a more favorable rate.

4. Take Advantage of Automatic Payments

Most banks offer a way to automatically deduct money from your account to pay creditors. In addition, the creditors usually offer a lower interest rate when you sign up for this payment option because they get their money faster and on-time. Consider it as one fewer check to write, envelope to lick and stamp to buy. Just make sure you record the deduction when the automatic payment is scheduled or you run the risk of bouncing other checks.

5. Computerize Your Checkbook

Using a software program is a handy way to organize your finances. Whether it’s Quicken(r), Microsoft Money(r) or another package, these easy-to-use programs make bill paying and bank reconciliation a cinch. Computer checks can be ordered almost anywhere and fit right into most printers. Once the checks are printed, all of the information is automatically recorded in your electronic checkbook. Furthermore, many banks have direct downloads into these software packages so when money is deposited or withdrawn, the transaction is entered immediately onto your computer. And, when it comes time to do taxes, it couldn’t be easier.

6. Get Overdraft Protection

Most banks have a service where, if you run the risk of bouncing a check, the money will come from another source. For a nominal fee, the bank will link your checking account to either a savings, money market, or credit card so the embarrassment of bouncing a check will be avoided. Call or visit your bank to learn about this convenient feature.

7. Cancel Unused Accounts

Whether it’s a credit card or bank account, write a letter requesting that the account is formally closed. Not only will this improve your credit score, it is a useful way to avoid money from being scattered all over the place. Don’t let department stores and credit card companies lure you into opening new accounts by offering favorable interest rates and purchase discounts. It’s easy for credit to get out of hand by taking advantage of every credit offer that comes your way.

8. Consolidate Your Accounts

If you have several credit card accounts with outstanding balances, try to consolidate them into one. Be careful and check the balance transfer interest rates and one-time fees. Also, make a list of all your open Money Markets, Savings, CDs, IRAs, Mutual Funds, and other accounts to see if any consolidation can be done. Keeping your money in fewer places eliminates all of the guesswork involved and reduces errors.

9. Establish Automatic Savings

Create a link from your checking account into a savings account that will not be touched. This can usually be done through the banks and automatic amounts will be transferred over each month. Most people will not put money into a savings account on a regular basis. They may wait until a large tax refund check arrives or some other event to actually deposit money into savings, retirement or other accounts. If you establish an automatic savings deposit every month, your accounts will begin accumulating money faster than you think.

10. Clean up Your Files

Make sure your paid bills are organized in a filing cabinet. Keep individual files for paid bills. Go through your files at the end of each year and throw out bills and receipts no longer needed for auditing purposes. Contact your local IRS office to see how long records need to be kept for audits. Usually federal tax return audits can be done three years back but cancelled checks may need to be kept for seven. Consult the Internet for auditing and records-keeping procedures for your state or region.
